THROUGH ME THE WAY INTO THE WOEFUL CITY,
THROUGH ME THE WAY INTO THE ETERNAL PAIN,
THROUGH ME THE WAY AMONG THE LOST PEOPLE,
JUSTICE MOVED MY MAKER ON HIGH,
DIVINE POWER MADE ME AND SUPREME WISDOM AND PRIMAL LOVE;
BEFORE ME NOTHING WAS CREATED BUT ETERNAL THINGS
AND I ENDURE ETERNALLY
ABANDON EVERY HOPE, YE THAT ENTER. — Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy
Very dark. Black actually. And one of the fallacies of Catholicism, thank God (so to speak).
Completely agree with Zoe. But being a slightly less sophisticated feline, I will add only that this is one of the most powerful uses of a poetic method called anaphora, where the writer repeats the same few words at the beginning of each line and/or verse. Love it!!
